Frequently asked questions

Are Dylon Dyes colourfast?

Dylon Cold Dye + Cold Dye Fix, Dylon Machine Permanent Dye and Dylon Colourfast Dye are colourfast in terms of their resistance to losing colour under normal domestic washing conditions. This assumes that the dyes have been applied correctly and subsequently all excess dye has been removed by washing according to the instructions. Dylon Multi-Purpose Dye and Dylon Machine Liquid Dye are not colourfast and should be washed separately.

Can Dylon Dyes be mixed to achieve other colours?

Yes. Dylon Dyes are fully intermixable within each individual range. For example, you must not mix Multi-Purpose Dye with Cold Water Dyes. When mixing dyes follow the rules learned at school à Red + Yellow = Orange etc. It is often better to predict the final colour when using the purer brighter colours.

Can I cover bleach spots or stains with dye?

Bleach spot and stains affect the way or extent the dye is taken up. Bleach spots usually mean the dye will not be taken up as strongly in that area. Some stains also act in this way although others promote the uptake of dye giving a higher concentration of colour in the area of the stain. Dyes are not an effective way of covering bleach marks or stains. Fabrics should wherever possible be clean and free of stains and bleach marks.

Can I spray, drizzle, drip, or splash dye onto fabric? Will it be permanent?

Yes. You can use any of the above techniques. The permanence of the result will depend on the dyes used and how close the technique comes to the standard method. It is usually advantageous to leave dyeing done by these methods overnight to achieve fixation of the dyes. It is usually best to wash such items separately at least for the first time.

What does salt do? Should I use table or cooking salt?

Salt opens up the pores of the fibre and helps to push the dye solution onto the fibre. It does not matter whether the salt is table or cooking. It is important to use sufficient as indicated in the instructions. Insufficient salt will result in a reduced depth of shade being obtained.

Can I dye carpet / upholstery?

Dylon dyes are not recommended for dyeing carpets or upholstery as the fibres are often unsuitable and the normal methods of dyeing by immersion are impractical. In addition, the costs of failure are large and the potential for failure is significant.
